As for routers, they are increasingly less common, and they are still fairly niche. The trend is for them to get more powerful and use more features, such as networked cameras and gaming consoles. So that the router can handle more traffic, it has to have more ports, and more features. On the other hand, the router has to be less powerful, and less feature-packed. In that respect, serial ports are a good match.
