What’s in a name? Well, for some people, a lot. As we all know, the French are very proud of their culture and language. The same can be said about those with French names. This blog post features 6 Netflix shows that feature unique female characters with French names!
In this blog post, I’ll be discussing these six Netflix shows that feature female characters with French names. These are some of my favorite TV series, and they’re all worth a watch if you have time!
* “Stranger Things“: This sci-fi horror show is set in 1983 Indiana where 12 year old Will’s disappearance immediately unleashes something sinister on the town. The first season has eight episodes, but it’s been confirmed for an October 2017 release date for Season Two. It stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Chief Hopper and Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler – three parents trying to find their missing children after being ensnared by a creature from another world at an arts and crafts fair.
* “The OA“: This mystery drama series is a Netflix Original about Prairie Johnson, an adopted woman who returned after being missing for seven years and her subsequent journey to find the person responsible for her captivity. The first season has eight episodes with all of them available on Prime Video in both SD and HD quality. It stars Brit Marling as Prairie Johnson, Jason Isaacs as Hap Jones, Alice Krige as Dr Larry Ferris and Scott Wilson as Abel Turner – three scientists tasked by government officials with trying to figure out what happened when she suddenly reappeared so many years later.
* “Orange Is the New Black“: One groundbreaking show that features female characters with French names is **[
-Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen
This is a show about two sisters who are on opposite sides of the marriage spectrum. Elinor Dashwood falls in love with Edward Ferrars but she needs to get her father’s blessing before they can marry. Meanwhile, Marianne Dashwood gets engaged to Colonel Brandon though their romance isn’t without its obstacles too. The story follows both girls as they battle through life’s ups and downs. This Netflix Original adaptation stars Emma Thompson (Elinor) and Kate Winslet (Marianne).
-Sharp Objects, Gillian Flynn
In this crime thriller based off of Gillian Flynn’s novel by the same name, Amy Adams plays reporter Camille Preaker who is sent back home to cover the murders of two young girls. Camille soon realizes that she has more in common with these victims than she thought and might just be a suspect herself.
-The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky
In this coming-of-age story Charlie (Logan Lerman) deals with first love, family issues, mental illness while attending school for his freshman year at high school. This adaptation features Emma Watson playing Sam – one of Charlie’s classmates on the show who finds himself drawn to him against her own better judgment. The movie also stars Ezra Miller as Patrick and Kate Walsh as Mrs. Lancaster
]], Sense and Sensibility **[This Netflix Original is a modern-day adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1811 novel. This Netflix Original is based on Alice Hoffman’s 1989 novel about four Connecticut residents struggling to make sense of their lives against the backdrop of fairy tales. Mia Farrow plays Mrs. March – mother to Meg Murry (Dakota Blue Richards), Joanna Eberhart Bishop (“Sandra Oh”), Leslie Burke “Anna Paquin” and her brother Charles Wallace Murry “CJ Adams”.

Sense and Sensibility captures both Austen’s wit and her insight of human nature as it follows Elinor Dashwood (Kate Winslet) through various trials with love, loss, and misunderstandings. Marianne might be more impulsive than her sister but also brings an ebullient spirit that complements Elinor’s stoicism. As sisters their differences often lead them to argue passionately about issues such as propriety or financial security which provides much humor for readers who know how to appreciate Austen’s biting sense of humor.
Murder She Wrote **[This show is based on the crime writer, Jessica Fletcher.]]
The Bodyguard **[A singer (Whitney Houston) falls in love with her bodyguard while touring and they must work together to figure out who killed a politician before it happens again!]

Leaving Neverland **[This documentary follows the lives of two little boys who accused Michael Jackson (1958-2009) of child molestation in 1993 and 1994 respectively; it aired on HBO as four parts.]]
HBO’s Leaving Neverland tells the story about how Michael Jackson may have sexually abused young children he had befriended. I’d be careful with this one if you’re looking for something to watch not so much because it messes up my childhood memories, but because its subject matter is very upsetting to me L’admirable Mme.
