Being a successful business owner is tough. If you’re reading this and nodding in agreement, then you know what I’m talking about. You are probably working long hours, or maybe even more than one job to make ends meet. And if you can’t do that? Then it’s time to start thinking about how your family will get by without the income from your home-based business! There are many challenges for those who work at home – but there are also some great tips that might help. 13 of them, in fact!

Tip #13: Take care of yourself. You’ll be able to make better decisions and meet your goals if you are emotionally, physically, and mentally healthy – so get plenty of sleep, eat well-balanced meals (and lots of fruit), exercise regularly, avoid alcohol or drugs when possible/necessary for work purposes only.

I hope these tips have been useful! I’m going to go now because it’s getting late in the day here in Sydney Australia .. but please feel free to contact me with any questions :) ~~Karen Tyler

It can be tough managing a home business while being a mother or father who wants some time off from the kids once in awhile too. But there are ways that can help minimize this stress.

One way is to try and find a sole proprietorship or LLC entity that allows you to be your own boss, hire people who work for you, have an office/home space separate from where the children live, etc. ~~Joe Smith Jr., Co-owner of Betta Fish Names

Tip #14: Be the best parent you can be. Kids grow up fast, and they need to feel loved unconditionally by their parents for them to have a “safe place” in the world during this time. Make sure to find your own safe spot too; don’t ever neglect yourself while caring for others. ~~Joe Smith Jr., Co-owner of Betta Fish Names

As always, keep following my blog for more posts like these! I’ll be back later this week with another post covering some other tips and tricks for succeeding in the Betta fish names industry.

Tip #16: Get a separate phone line for your business if you can afford it. ~~Joe Smith Jr., Co-owner of Betta Fish Names

Commentary on Tip 16: This is probably the most helpful tip yet because there are so many benefits to having a home office with its own number that I could go on about this all day! But suffice it to say, getting an additional phone line will make receiving calls and making outgoing calls much easier than trying to manage everything from one landline or cell phone. ~~Tiffany Jones, Editor at Home Business Magazine

Tip #18: You might need some help starting your business; consider hiring an accountant and/or lawyer. ~~Joe Smith Jr., Co-owner of Betta Fish Names

Commentary on Tip 18: Giving your business the right legal foundation is crucial, and an accountant can help you maximize deductions and ensure you’re meeting tax filing deadlines. If this sounds like too much to handle alone, it might be time to consider a service such as LegalZoom or Nolo where professionals will guide you through everything from start up questions to maintaining compliance with changes in law so that your company never has a lapse in coverage.~Tiffany Jones, Editor at Home Business Magazine

Tip #13: Have some snacks handy! ~~Donna Kwan, Owner of Donna’s Donuts Unlimited Incorporated

Commentary on Tip #13:

Donna Kwan has been successfully running her doughnut business for over 20 years, and she credits a steady diet of sweets with giving her the energy to keep going. “It’s easy to skip breakfast when you have so much work to do around the house in order to make sure that your home office is set up nicely” says Donna. “I usually start my day off right by having some donuts or pastries from my own store.” For those who are interested in starting their own small food service establishment, such as an ice cream shop or pizza place, this tip may be helpful!~Tiffany Jones, Editor at Home Business Magazine

Tip #18: If you need to take a break from your work, make sure that you’re still being productive. Take some time for yourself to read or meditate and come back refreshed!

Tip #20: If it’s too difficult to have an office in the house because of space constraints, consider renting out unused rooms on Airbnb – this can be a great way to bring in extra income while allowing people access to homes with lots of room for their own home offices.

Commentary on Tip #13: Donna Kwan has been successfully running her doughnut business for over 20 years, and she credits a steady diet of sweets with giving her the energy to keep going. “It’s easy to skip breakfast when you have so much work around-the-clock,” she said. “I found that a daily donut or cookie is enough for me to stay alert and keep going all day long!”

Commentary on Tip #11: One way to make sure you’re having optimum focus at work (assuming your workplace allows it) is to put up a “Quiet Zone” sign in the area where you’ll be working so as not to draw attention from others who might want their own quiet time. The idea behind this tip is that if there’s even one other person around and they’re doing anything but focusing on what needs done, then everyone’s productivity will go down.

Tip #13: Donna Kwan has been successfully running her doughnut and coffee shop for over 20 years. She has these words of advice: “Start small, work hard and never give up – because you’ll get there!” Tip #14: When Donna Kwan first started her doughnut business with a partner in the early 1990s, she had to find creative ways to make money through the tough economic times that followed Hurricane Andrew near Miami. Her solution? Selling doughnuts at flea markets on weekends–such as Bunny’s Flea Market in North Bay Village (now known as South Dade Flea Market) or Greenacres City Courthouse Square–for $0.25 apiece every Sunday from 1993-1995.
